just imagine in 10 years time, in the back of your mind you remember tumblr, you open it up and you’re still logged in and you get to look at your blog and remember all this.

now imagine if you went back to see your old blog of your teenage years and it had been deleted because somebody ‘wanted your url’

how sad would that be

this and there are some blogs that don’t need to be active forever. some just need to remain as an archive by their purpose.

i hate it when kids say “oh that teacher just hates me” and i’ve almost never believed it until now

i’m pretty sure that my teacher dislikes me. Not that she hates me, but that she fundamentally dislikes me.

And I hate her.

Like I guess she’s not a bad teacher or anything but she’s just been very unhelpful with me and has just been grinding my gears. She seems to have a preconception of who we all are and I don’t think she’s going to let me out of that box.

Stats Pr0n of the Day: U.S. Map of Hate Speech on Twitter

Since June 2012, Dr. Monica Stevens of Humboldt State University in California has been mapping more than 150,000 geotagged tweets that contain homophobic, racist or abliest language. The result is the Geography of Hate, an interactive map of the U.S. which reveals the hotspots of “hate tweets” across the country. A deeper analysis of the project is available at Floating Sheep.

It’s really interesting to see that the hateful messages aren’t divided into North and South, but left and right! And the more hateful side is….. right wingers! Somehow I’m not surprised at all.

Actually it seems like it mostly just follows population density and urbanization, AKA the frequency of teenagers and young adults who know what twitter is and use it frequently to say dumb shit.

So this is basically just a recoloured population density map, marking how many people are where. And surprise surprise, more people means more racists.

your location has nothing to do with racism and its frequency. I’d hope this would do well to be known by any enlightened, white 20 somethings who live out west.

That is a point, however, it doesn’t mean that the map is inaccurate. It measures how often hate speech is made in each location. If you are in an area with higher population, you’re likely to hear it more often. But look at the most populated cities like NYC and Boston and compare the relatively low occurrence of hate speech there, compared to the more sparsely populated midwest. It’s not an exact indicator.

As someone who lives in one of the more bigoted states on the south east, went to college in the Bible Belt, and has also lived in more liberal areas (like the Bay Area of CA and various European countries) I can attest to the fact that you hear a lot more hate speech around those “red” states. And it has little to do with population density(the most bigoted places I’ve been were small town, sprawling country areas) and more to do with lack of education and a culture, religion, and media that reinforces paranoia, bigoted stereotypes and hatefulness.

By definition, calling yourself “right wing” means that you want to justify social inequality. How can anyone so gladly admit being on the side of oppression?

I’m glad you really like me. I would like to like you too. But I cannot agree or make excuses for with people who want to enforce inequality.

Just a note to people: make sure you remember to differentiate between social and economic leanings. A person can be socially left but fiscally right.

That said a lot of people who identify as “right wing” are actually left wingers since they’re all for taxing the rich and giving people rights.

A couple weeks back in my SS class, we had a poster project about North and South Korea. We were assigned topics for either of the countries and in groups we had to research those topics and create a poster.

My group of 3 and I split up the work and went to researching independently. We did, of course, send around sources to one another if we found something though. I did this for them, they did this for me. No one was sitting around on their ass. Everyone was doing something.

To make sure that we were all doing our work and to keep tabs on who was doing what, the teacher had us all set up a doc on Google to collaborate on and to share with her. We had to label what on the document we had done and for one day we had to write a summary of everything we did that day.

On the last day of working, we were trying to glue our project together and print everything out and all. We were done. We just needed to print it. However, there was an issue with the printer network and some of the laptops couldn’t print, including mine. I managed to print something from another person’s laptop, but I still had much more left to print. Because of this, she told everyone that we could come in before school the next day and print everything out and finish our posters.

A good deal of my data was already on the group document, but I also shared the ready-to-print report with one of the group members. After making sure she didn’t need me to help with anything else, I left for my next class after making a last minute forced choice to come in the next morning.

The next morning comes and my family and I remember “oh shit”.

You see, the entire music department was going on a trip to perform and we were leaving after school that day. In the morning, we had to drop off our luggage to be checked.

After we fumbled through our morning routines, my mother drove me to school through traffic hell. Students both in and out of the music department as well as the average daily commuter and resident were trying to drive on the street. Cars were stopped all over the parking lot for kids to get out and unload their luggage. Buses were coming. It was kind of a nightmare to get into the school. But I ended up getting out and wheeling my luggage over to the back of the line.

As a side note, this is the most popular trip that the music department goes on. Probably about a hundred people join the music department just to go on this trip and then the following year they drop out. So as if we didn’t already have a mammoth music department (and trust me, we do) there a ton of kids on line.

Once you dropped off your luggage, you could go.

By the time I had gotten in, checked in, found a place for my luggage, set it, and secured it, I didn’t think I had the time to go all the way upstairs to the back corner of the school to work on our poster.

“Besides,” I figured, “they have my work anyway.”

Like every music kid I struggled through my classes in anticipation until I got to that one. I walked in, saw our half empty poster hanging on the wall and nearly had a heart attack. The teacher came up to me asking where I was this morning and I frantically scanned the room for my group members. I explained to her that I was at luggage drop off but didn’t get to say much else before class started.

As if the universe wanted to rub the shame in my face or something, we were scheduled to spend the entire period just walking around and taking notes on everyone’s posters. As soon as we get up to walk around, I target my group and walk over to them.

I apologized for not being there that morning and asked if they had gotten the work I sent to them.

They did.

But.

They “didn’t know what to print out” (which was the whole thing) and decided not to print out any of it. (Suppose that didn’t read it either)

I was angry, but I guess it was my fault for not being there. Still, the entire thing seemed like a very innocent mistake on all of our parts. Maybe I should have been docked some points for not showing up that morning. But I did leave my work with them, so it’s perfectly explainable right?

The teacher asked me to use her laptop to print out my material at the end of class. I had no time to actually put it on the poster, so she had me just hand it in to her. At least I’ll get credit for that, even if it’s only partial.

We finally get our grade on the poster back and we did fairly decent. I didn’t see the rubric, but my group told me the grade. I thought I was fine.

Today, I go in after school to speak to the teacher because of some other concerns with my grades. (Those concerns being that she thinks I may fail the year because she thinks I won’t do the next three major projects)

She mentions the poster project when she’s talking about my track record with handing things in and mentions how I didn’t show up that morning.

So I jump to my defense. I was intensely afraid that she’d have taken points off for that, but maybe if I made her understand just why my material wasn’t on the poster, that it wasn’t entirely my fault, and that I didn’t just show up without a safety net, then maybe she’d reconsider the grade or something.

“Wuh— I”.

I don’t even get to say the entire word “Well” before she immediately fires back “No, no, no.”

“But I”

She then goes on about how “everyone who went on the music trip got here and got their stuff done” as if that was even relevant to the argument she refused to let me present. And I sit there for a little bit listening to her go on about this even though it was almost entirely irrelevant.

She then proceeded to tell me that I almost received a zero for the project because I “didn’t actually participate”. A zero. In other words, she would not count any of the work I did manage to do or any of the work that she saw I had done or supposedly checked to see what we had done. She ended up giving me credit only for the small charts I made and printed out, “which wasn’t much”. Not even the parts of the project she asked me to hand in afterward. I wouldn’t even get credit for thinking to give my work to my group to print out, since she refused to even hear that I had.

I wanted to cry. I’m so terribly frustrated by this because it just isn’t fair. Do I deserve to have points taken off for not showing up? Probably. But do I deserve to practically fail the project because my group chose not to include my work? No. That just isn’t fair.
